The bill
that was to reform Alimony, Senate Bill 0718, was vetoed by Florida Governor,
Rick Scott on May 1, 2013. I have recently spoken throughout the community
regarding this bill and the pros/cons associated with it. Regardless of where
you stand on the matter, it was to have an enormous impact on alimony
recipients. The Miami Herald quoted the governor's response as such, “I have concluded that I cannot support this
legislation because it applies retroactively and thus tampers with the settled
economic expectations of many Floridians who have experienced divorce,” Scott
wrote in a veto letter. “The retroactive adjustment of alimony could result in
unfair, unanticipated results.”
